Ok its official blogging is not my medium. So this is a special blog :) .
Highlights from the un-blogged realm:

Giving a rather intense 5 word speech at the 2007 webby awards “Get Enlightened or Die Trying!”, followed by hanging out with the Onion guys at the after-party (these guys are as smart as you'd hope – Gen X / second tier)

Meeting up with one of the directors from Hearst publishing (works on the 37th floor – I thought that was particularly impressive, oh and Terri and I also hung out with the Youtube founders. ( Steve was a real menche, the other guy was a bit of a ****). Anyhow enough about that . . .

We released the latest issue of WIE. It was probably the hardest design job I’ve ever done . . . the goal was for Paul and I to design this issue in a way that wouldn’t objectify, stereotype, patronize or exploit the women, but instead would cause one to question "what is woman, past-present-future? 70% of all available royalty free imagery uses the female form – I’d say 98% of that creates a stereotype that is flagrantly designed to help sell products. I tasted what it must be like for a women to present herself . . . Guys we haven’t a clue! . . . If a women wears make-up she’s making a statement, if she wears jewelry she’s making a statement, if she wears trousers she’s making a statement. And guess what . . .  if she doesn’t wear make-up she’s making a statement, if she doesn’t wear jewelry she’s making a statement, if doesn’t wear trousers . . . . etc etc. Damn! And if that wasn't enough everybody has an opinion of how a women’s form should look . . .  its really quite intense. Anyhow I settled for silhouettes (Apple knows what its doing I guess :)) Also I learned that to make a women less attractive often ends up being pretentious and patronizing—go figure! I guess to any women reading this all this is obvious but I think for men this is a bit of a revelation. I’m also struck by how much freer men are to not conform to the social norms in our culture . . . And Men & Women are both responsible for this predicament.

Other highlights include launching the universe project website(at least in a beta form). Please go check it out . . . any ideas and creative friction are welcome

Finally if you haven’t been to MoMA NYC . . . YOU MUST GO! I'd wanted to go for years but I’d never had the time. I spent just and hour on floor 3 & 4 at the end of the day when it was almost empty of people . . . for any fellow creative out there, its like drinking the purest elixir of creativity . . . these masterpieces expand the creative mind to a point of almost bursting.

Ok that’s it I’m blogged-out

New WIE + house-plants!?

Posted on Mar 12th, 2007 by Will : Pure Creative Freedom Will
I36
Apparently taking care of a blog is akin to looking after houseplants — plants (apparently!?) should be watered frequently, given time to grow and breath, but on no accounts over-watered. So by this metaphor my blog is a spiky cactus-like plant!?! — Heavily watered, but only once in a very great while! Poor justification I know . . .

WIE 36 has left the building. I know I’m biased, but I think its a masterpiece (I didn’t write it I just made it look pretty:)). The theme is humanity’s age-old search for utopia— It takes us on an incredible journey, throughout history, exploring the impulse to reach towards a better future, and examining some fascinating modern communities and trends, from an impressive spiritual experiment in the mountains of Italy to the booming digital phenomena of online community . . . you guessed it— Zaadz is back and this time in dialogue format with the WIE team  . . . definitely not to be missed! So if you’ve no idea what I’m writing about Subscribe now! :)

Secondly I’m going to be traveling to California next week . . . Black ops . . . can’t say anything now, but stay tuned. I’m planning to do a blog & vlog

Here’s the cover of latest edition of WIE,
LMK what you think?
PS also write me if your interested in taking part in future WIE cover surveys and the like

Sex, Love . . . & Enlightenment

Posted on Jan 6th, 2007 by Will : Pure Creative Freedom Will
This has been an awesome week. As I mentioned earlier Andrew gave a teaching on sexuality and relationship . . . so I wanted to write a little about why it’s significant.

2006 has been a break-through year in the Revolution. Since what we named declaration day November 2005 a deeper commitment has coalesced in a core body of students. Andrew has written about it himself and its definitely my experience that we are beginning to find our feet in a completely new terrain where the emphasis isn’t on stabilizing something in consciousness, but with the beginnings of a stable intersubjective consciousness we are endeavoring to create a revolution in culture.

As I said a small but not insignificant number of students appear to have crossed a fundamental marker in their evolution as a seeker/finder. Andrew has described it as crossing a 51% threshold where one is now emotionally and psychologically more interested in evolution and the desires of the authentic self, as opposed to the fears and desires of the ego. What one discovers is literally a new world.

This may sound grandiose but Andrew’s teaching this weekend was a direct response to this shift occurring with his students.

In the last few months several of us have started to get interested in what a sexual relationship in an evolutionary context would look like. Although I have been in a relationship with Terri for 3 years it’s only fairly recently that I have genuinely started to question deeply what an evolutionary trajectory in sexual relationship would mean. So I was thrilled when Andrew decided to dedicate a teaching to this question of Love & Sex in the context of evolutionary enlightenment.

I’m not going to try to paraphrase Andrew but check here for a detailed description of the teachings, and video excerpt. Feel free to ask me anything about the teaching or my own experience.

Branding . . . confessions of an ex-artist

Posted on Dec 30th, 2006 by Will : Pure Creative Freedom Will
So I’m taking a tangent here . . . confessions of an ex- artist . . . yes I have become the archenemy — the Anti-Artist . . . I have whats called MBD or Master Brand Disorder. I’ve been a designer and Art Director for 14 years now and in this time my perspective has shifted from creating “art” to ‘building brands’ . . . in other words to all you artists out there . . . Yes I sold out!

Seriously though in the last year I’ve been working with super consultant Kevin Clark, who has help the organization and me make this critical shift. With Kevin’s help we changed the name of our organization from “Impersonal Enlightenment Fellowship” (How did that ever happen? I tell you it wasn’t me :-)) to “EnlightenNext” . . . ahhh! simple you see . . . the-next-enlightenment!

Over the next few months I’m going to start rolling out our new brand which much more accurately illustrates what EnlightenNext’s actual mission is . . .

So for your eyes only, on this very special occasion, I’m going to pull away the curtain and reveal all!!!! PS I have divided all we do into 4 distinct ‘streams’ (and its very important never to cross these streams)

Oh yes . . . this is all still a work in progress . . . as always everything is impermanent :)
What a mess! . . .

Christmas . . . and beyond!

Posted on Dec 27th, 2006 by Will : Pure Creative Freedom Will
To be honest we don’t celebrate Christmas. When it comes to Christianity my upbringing is pretty secular (right Mum). Foxhollow is pretty empty; students are with their families but will be returning over the next few days in preparation for next weekend.

At 2pm Katherine (our exceptional head cook) informed a small group of guys  “there had been an idea . . .”  the Men prepare dinner. I’m sure for many men this is bread and butter, a staple life experience . . . This doesn’t apply this small group of men! Our diet has in recent years taken a serious swing in the uber health direction, from vegetarian, to vegan, to raw . . .  so when it comes to gourmet vegetarian food, most of us are a little out of practice :-) Anyhow needless to say, I think when we realized that we had an opportunity to roast potatoes, roast sprouts, roast seitan (yes seitan), gravy and peas etc and the finished product would be predominantly brown and black and not green, the mood changed from panic to ecstasy.

We followed the meal with the movie . . . about 40 of us crammed into a room with our teacher watching “Devil wears Prada” . . . if you haven’t seen it you must. Very smart and sassy plot, great characters . . . Meryl Streep was born to play her role. Its a must see for anyone out there who (like me) feels superior to the superficiality of the fashion industry . . . . Pushes all you buttons but makes you re-think your position.

New Years eve is going to be a big celebration here. We are going to have a large wedding ceremony . . . large in that several couples are getting married (Kool Aid not supplied :-). . . Oh INS please don’t panic its all kosher) At this point Andrew is planning to give a talk to his students about Sexual Relationship in an Evolutionary Enlightenment context, and then we’ll have the ceremony . . . the evening will be capped off by Andrew’s band Unfulfilled Desires playing. More on all this as the plans unfold . . .

Past to Present . . . in a 30 seconds

Posted on Dec 25th, 2006 by Will : Pure Creative Freedom Will
THE PAST: Three years later, after being pretty adamant I would never have a teacher, I met Andrew  . . . I was 19 years old . . . within 3 more years my life turned upside down,  I had quit college and moved into Andrews Cohen’s London community with other students.

OK fast-forward 14 years . . . a serious amount of life experience has happened, I imagine several lifetimes worth (if you believe in the multiple birth thing ;))

THE PRESENT: Last night Andrew, myself and seven other male students had a sauna together. We started at 11.30pm, Andrew had just finished a call with a young teacher named Swami Sai Premananda, a western-asian Indian growing up in Toronto Canada, he had been told to go out and teach by non other than Sai Baba, but he was starting to question some of the trappings of his lineage, and was finding a lot of strength and inspiration in Andrews own story, and exploration of enlightenment in a post-metaphysical context. As Andrew relayed the conversation all of us were marveling at the similarity in story, but also in this young teachers courage to question thousands of years of tradition in search of truth. For myself it very tangibly demonstrates Ken Wilber’s  ‘Myth of the Given’.

We spent several hours in an intense sauna recipe! You bake your brains out for 20mins then cold plunge . . . repeat until utterly totally blasted and ecstatic! The only rule is no one leaves the sauna until the the sand timer is empty . . . ok its kind of macho, but it keeps the collective field tight, the philosophy is your in it together— no matter what :)

After that we hung out for another hour or so sitting around a table, snacking on nuts and cereal, discussion among other things Ken’s health, the recent organizational changes at I-I, and then heard Andrew’s vision for the next 2 years of EnlightenNext— the ‘evolution of our revolution’ ( we often refer to our community “the revolution” because sadly the ‘C’ word belongs to a bygone era . . . the ‘60s :) ). . . more about this later

AT 2.30 am I rolled into bed, my wife who had been asleep rolled over and said with a grin ‘you have fun?’,  I smiled back and we both quickly fell asleep.

She and a group of close women students had spent the afternoon with Andrew — all afternoon from what I can tell. Terri said it was video’ed  so should have some footage of what happened soon . . . for now heres another video check this out.

OK . . . so there we have it my first post on an evening in the life of a close student of Andrew Cohen . . .

In the beginning . . .

Posted on Dec 24th, 2006 by Will : Pure Creative Freedom Will
One day when I was 15 my mother returned home from Devon England after meeting spiritual teacher Andrew Cohen for the first time, she walked in the door, glowing with bliss I had never seen in my short life like it . . . I remember my father becoming instantly bright red in the face with anger . . . “you’ve fallen in love haven’t you” he growled . . . and in a way I guess she had.

So I wanted to tell the story of a long-time student of Andrew Cohen. Casting my eyes through the array of links  . . . (we’re all fascinated to see what google dredges up), a good deal of it pretty scathing stuff about Andrew Cohen, all sounds pretty heavy, what kind of a deranged idiot would want to be a student?! A good piece of advice I received when I was a five year old still applies . . .  “You don’t want to believe everything you hear “ — So as an effort to help put the record straight about this remarkable, if a bit unusual life . . . Im going to blog about it :)
